Dating back to the 17th century and the beginnings of our country, the area we now know as Fauquier County was listed in 1608 as part of the Northern Neck of the Colony of Virginia by Captain John Smith, explorer and leader of the Jamestown Colony. Named after Francis Fauquier, Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Virginia from 1758 to 1768, Fauquier County was founded from a section of land previously considered Prince William County, and incorporated in 1759.

In honor thereof, on May 1, 2009 Fauquier County will be commemorating its 250th birthday! As part of the countywide celebration Parks and Recreation will showcase historical sites and significant events that tok place during the last two and one half centuries. Those activities will focus on the history of site operated by Parks and Recreation but will also address other significant aspects of County history. Mark your calendars now and bring the family to enjoy events offered for all ages.

Click here to read more about the upcoming events and celebration here in your neighborhood, Fauquier County.
